Kindergarten

KINDERGARTEN READINESS

Here are some things you can work on to ensure that your child has a successful transition to Kindergarten:

  • Read to your child daily
  • Visit the public library--it is free!
  • Help your child practice writing his/her name with proper letter formation
  • Show your child how to use scissors
  • Help your child learn how to tie shoes and to use buttons and zippers independently
  • Encourage your child to follow directions, such as cleaning up, sharing, and helping others
  • Talk to your child about his/her coming to kindergarten and discuss any fears or concerns


Kindergarten objectives:

1st trimester:

Reading 
Recognizes and names uppercase and lowercase letters. 
Produces the sound for each consonant. 
Uses a combination of drawing and writing to compose a narrative.

Math
Counts objects 1-20
Recognizes numbers 0-10
Counts backwards from 10
Counts by 10s to 50
Recognizes shapes – circle, square, rectangle, triangle
Counts forward from any given number within 0-35
Counts 0-35

2nd trimester:

Reading
Recognizes and names uppercase and lowercase letters.  
Produces the sound for each consonant and 5 short vowel sounds. 
With prompting and support, retells stories and key details.

With prompting and support, compares and contrasts stories.

Uses a combination of drawing and writing to compose an informational text.

Counts forward to 75
Counts objects 1-50
Recognizes numbers 0-35
Counts backwards from 15
Counts by 10s to 110
Recognizes shapes – circle, square, triangle, rectangle, rhombus, oval
Count forward from any given number within 0-75

3rd Trimester:

Reading
Recognizes and produce rhyming words. 
Produces the sound for each consonant and 5 short and long vowel sounds. 
Reads high frequency words by sight.  

With prompting and support identify the main topic and retell key details of an informational text.
Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding in an informational text.

Use a combination of drawing and writing to compose an opinion piece.

With guidance and support from adults, respond to questions and suggestions from peers and add details to strengthen writing as needed.
Prints many upper and lower-case letters

Math
Counts forward to 111
Recognizes numbers 0-100
Counts backwards from 20
Recognizes shapes – circle, square, triangle, rectangle, rhombus, oval, trapezoid, hexagon
Compares and contrasts quantities (more, equal, less)
Counts forward from any given number within 0-111
Solve addition and subtraction word problems within 10
Can read a graph and tell you which as more, less, or equal
